IUI researchers on a cruise to study CO2 vents in Papua New Guinea

IUI researchers joined the French Institute for Research and Development (IRD) on a cruise to study CO2 vents in Papua New Guinea (PNG).  The team, headed by Riccardo Rodolfo-Metalpa of IRD is focusing on the acclimation capacity of corals and coral reef communities to extreme conditions such as the ones presented next to shallow hydrothermal seeps.  The team performed a series of experiments underwater and on board R/V Alis in Tutum Bay, off Ambitle Island in the New Ireland province of PNG. The IUI researchers Maoz Fine (Bar-Ilan University) and Tom Shlesinger (Tel Aviv University)  feel it was a unique opportunity to study coral resilience to elevated temperature and acidification conditions on one of the most diverse and beautiful coral reefs.
