The evolution of arthropod body plans - embryos and beyond

Date

Abstract

The last few years have seen a dramatic improvement in our understanding of arthropod evolution. This improvement has come through better and higher resolution phylogenies, through new fossils and a re-analysis of previously studied fossils, and through improved sampling of extant arthropods from a genomic and developmental perspective. In my talk I will focus on the generation of the arthropod body plan during embryonic development, and discuss how this developmental process has evolved in different lineages. I will link these new insights from comparative embryology with the emerging synthetic view of arthropod evolution in general and discuss how different sources of data can be combined to give a unified view on the evolution of the arthropod body plan.
